The application, 5GBeamCheck, was defended by the researcher from the School of Telecommunications Engineering, Borja González Valdés.
Researcher Borja González Valdés, belonging to the COM group of the School of Telecommunications Engineering of the University of Vigo and belonging to the atlanTTic research center, has achieved fourth place in the competition organized by the European agency Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GSA) . In total, 200 projects from all over Europe were competing in a process that lasted six months where candidates were eliminated in three courts. Vigo’s candidacy was the only Spanish winner to compete with the 5GBeamCheck project.
The 5GBeamCheck app enables efficient diagnosis of 5G Beamforming antennas with short-haul flights. Considering that Beamdorming is an emerging technology, the potential market associated with the COM group’s solution is very important. Furthermore, this technology opens up very interesting future possibilities in European airspace for drones (U-Space).
To award the prizes, the GSA evaluated the degree of innovation, market potential, the relevance of Galileo, the degree of development of the prototype and the relationship with the specific needs of the region. Therefore, the COM group obtains this recognition from one of the leading institutions with regard to technologies related to satellite navigation. In addition to the prestige and support that the GSA distinction brings to the Vigo project, the award is endowed with 30,000 euros.
The application has also been supported by the GAIN innovation agency through the IGNICIA call, and participates in the BFAero accelerator in incubation mode. The COM group of the School of Telecommunications is made up of twelve researchers, leaders in fields such as communication theory and quantum cryptography, antennas, integrated photonics, satellites, radar signature, civil security, system 4.0 and cyber defense or computational electromagnetism.
