We are a leading research group in the area of electromagnetism. Our scope covers antenna design and measurement, computational electromagnetism, EMC, radar, millimiter waves applications, electro-optics and quantum information technology.

Radar

SC7B Team has an extensive experience in radar simulation as in radar measurements too.

In 1999, the Research and Development center of Spanish Navy (Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de la Armada, CIDA) entrusted to SC7-B Team a viability study of an instrumental radar for the Radar Cross Section (RCS) measurement of ships in the sea. This project was the first of a project series with the main goal of attainment a measurement, processing and presentation equipment of the RCS and High Resolution Profiles (HRR) of targets in the sea. SC7-B Team participated in all the different phases of this series designing, developing, manufacturing and testing the actual system called LIBRA. LIBRA was given to the Spanish Navy in 2004, the Electromagnetics Measurement Center (Center de Medidas Electromagnéticas, CEMEDEM) of the Navy has the use of LIBRA instrumental radar. Since then and until now SC7-B Team has acted as LIBRA operator and has advised the CEMEDEM, in numerous measurement campaigns of different units (ships, frigates, patrol crafts, submarines, airships,…), participating even in international campaigns like the NATO Electronic Warfare Trials (EWT).

LIBRA has also been used with another scientific aims like for example the analysis of the propagation conditions in marine environments, studies of marine clutter, effectiveness measurements of different decoys radar, validation of radar absorbents materials (RAM), etc. For all the mentioned studies SC7-B Team has elaborated the protocols and signal radar processing routines and tools required.

Members of SC7-B Team took part in differents NATO special working groups meetings, concretely:

  • Special Working Group (SWG)/4. Electronic warfare. Subject: Electronic War. Radar Cross Section (RCS).
  • Special Working Group (SWG)/10. Naval electromagnetic environment effects. Subject: Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC). Electromagnetic interferences (EMI).

The SC7-B Team radar technologies knowhow in the military scope was suitable like starting point of new activities in the civil sphere of the radar applications. Concretely, nowadays SC7-B Team is working in a R&D project with the Galician Automotive Technology Centre (Centro Tecnológico de Automoción de Galicia, CTAG) to develop a automotive radar operating at 79 GHz. This R&D project supposes an important challenge for the Galician automobile sector.
